Safety valves - types and technical parameters

Safety valves are made of gray cast iron and steel, including stainless steel. They can be used to work with gas, water, various liquids and steam.

The principle of operation of such fittings is to balance the pressure of the working medium and the force of the spring acting on the plunger. If the pressure of the transported substances is below the norm, the pressure valve remains tight, when it is exceeded, the valve opens. Therefore, it is necessary to select the appropriate spring force and reinforcement diameter.

The valve opening process is determined by its design:

  1. Proportional work smoothly, the locking element is lifted evenly, based on the force of the flow of the working medium. The higher the pressure, the faster the valve opens. They are used in systems for transporting non-compressed substances, for example, water and other liquid compositions. Such fittings are inexpensive due to the simplified design and operation. The use of a proportional valve in lines with variable emergency flow prevents self-oscillations. However, the key positive quality of such a product is the ability to open to the extent necessary to set the proper pressure parameters in the pipeline, which will eliminate water hammer.
  2. Full lift pressure valves, unlike proportional valves, open abruptly. Due to this, the excess transported medium is quickly discharged. The lifting height of the locking element in such fittings is equal to ¼ of the saddle diameter or exceeds it. These products are characterized by two-position action and increased productivity. It is recommended to use them in systems with a compressed medium - steam, gas, air. The two-position method means that the bolt overcomes the design-limited power reserve in one step. They should not be used for water and liquids, because a sudden opening of the valve causes a powerful one-time release and pressure drop, as a result of which it will instantly close, and this will lead to water hammer.
  3. Low-lift are used in pipelines with a small throughput. The stroke of the locking component in them is a maximum of 0.05 of the seat diameter. Such valves use a proportional opening algorithm, since there is no need for a sharp pressure release. For low-lift gate valves, the permissible working medium is liquid and water.
  4. Standard pressure relief valve, also known as medium lift. The locking component here has a power reserve of 0.05 to 0.25 of the seat diameter. Performance is average. In principle, such fittings are in some way a universal option, since they are manufactured in proportional and two-position versions. Therefore, each buyer will be able to choose the best option, suitable for both compressed substances and liquids.

Note that in compressed air systems involved in compression equipment, valves can be used to support the free release of the transported composition into the atmosphere.
